New York Waterways Cruise

On April 30, 1929 the Watchtower at the top of the cliffs of the Palisades was dedicated. That morning, over 100 clubwomen sailed up the Hudson River to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the tremendous accomplishment that the Watchtower honors.

The day began with a warm welcome from NJSFWC President Shirley Holly and President-Elect Barbara McCloskey. Eric Nelson, Historic Interpreter from the Palisades Interstate Park lead a program on the history of the 12 mile park as well as the surrounding areas on the NY side of the river. He spoke of the efforts of early women of our federation whose years of lobbying and study led to the preservation of the Palisades from commercial development and to the creation of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission by New Jersey and New York.

While only a glimpse of the tower could be seen by boat, many women spoke of their personal experiences when they visited the tower either on a hike or as part of an organized picnic and tour. The vast historical importance of the area combined with our federation’s rich history made for a day that will be remembered by all who attended.
