Resolution Passed on Suicide Hotline
by Chris Sienkielewski
On October 17, 2020, President Trump signed into law a change to the National Suicide Hotline. The hotline will change from its current number of 1-800-273- TALK (8255) to 988. According to the FCC. this change will be implemented across the country by July 2022 in order to ensure the switch goes smoothly for callers and service providers. It will also give time for counselors to prepare for an expected surge in call volume once the change is in effect.
Callers to the hotline are routed to one of 163 crisis centers, which handled 2.2 million calls in 2018. The new number also aims to reduce the volume of mental health calls that go to 911.
NJSFWC members voted to approve the 2020 Resolution that recommended that the hotline number be changed to a 3-digit number.
Many thanks to all NJSFWC members who promoted this resolution. Another win-win for our communities nation-wide!
Correction
In last week’s eConnection. I mistakenly identified Jolie Frankfurth as GFWC Treasurer. She is the Secretary.
