eConnection 1/26: GCI Update, Convention Hotel Code & More

by Jan W. Hanson, NJSFWC President

Girls Career Institute UPDATE

We are still awaiting word from Rutgers regarding our use of the dorms. We do not expect to hear until February. This Director remains cautiously optimistic.

All new forms are currently available on the website under Material, under GCI

The most frequent question about GCI right now, other than will it happen, is about deadlines. Clubs are reluctant to choose delegates and have to disappoint them if we cancel. There are two Deadlines clubs need to be aware of.

January 31st is the deadline for a club to reserve a spot and pay the fee. No delegate information is needed with this reservation. This is non-refundable, unless we are forced to once again cancel GCI. This date lets us begin planning for expected numbers, regarding such things as, budget, number of rooms needed, number of staff needed, number of workshops needed and number of speakers for those workshops, etc.

March 31st is the deadline to register delegates. This means clubs have all of February and March to select delegates. We hope to know by early February if we can move forward with GCI 2022.

Book Discussion

On March 9th, NJSFWC ESO Chairman Pat Trainor will host an online book discussion via Zoom. The book selection is Moloka’I, by Alan Brennert.

This richly imagined novel, set in Hawaii more than a century ago, is an extraordinary epic of a little-known time and place and a deeply moving testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. Rachel Kalama, a spirited seven-year-old Hawaiian girl, dreams of visiting far-off lands like her father, a merchant seaman. Then one day a rose-colored mark appears on her skin, and those dreams are stolen from her. Taken from her home and family, Rachel is sent to Kalaupapa, the quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka’i. Here her life is supposed to end—but instead she discovers it is only just beginning.
